Sleep Disorders Dreaming

Question by Rachel: Sleep disorder – dreaming about waking up?
What is the sleep disorder called, where one believes they have woken up, but they are still dreaming, and this can happen several times in the same dream?
it is not for a condition i have, it is for a question i am trying to answer concerning the idea that can we ever know whether we are awake or dreaming? Think Descartes. I know it is a rare condition, but i don’t know the name of it. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Frankie
A lucid dream is a dream in which the person is aware that they are dreaming while the dream is in progress, also known as a conscious dream.

When the dreamer is lucid, they can actively participate in and often manipulate the imaginary experiences in the dream environment. Lucid dreams can be extremely real and vivid depending on a person’s level of self-awareness during the lucid dream.

A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (DILD) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes that they are dreaming, while a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state with no apparent lapse in consciousness.

Lucid dreaming has been researched scientifically, and its existence is well established. Scientists such as Allan Hobson, with his neurophysiological approach to dream research, have helped to push the understanding of lucid dreaming into a less speculative realm.

Sleep disorder apnea is a problem that is very dangerous and that can cause some high risk for possible heart attacks. This condition can happen when the esophagus closes during the sleep. A sign of this sleep disorder is the heavy snoring that goes after the stopping of breathing, the lacking of air will then cause the gasping. Central Sleep Apnea Causes

Several victims of the sleep disorder symptom would wake up many times at night because they are gasping for air to breath. Obese persons are most likely to develop this condition.

The central sleep apnea is a sleep disorder condition that is characterized by the repetitive stopping of breathing while sleeping for the reason that the brain is temporarily stopping to send signals within the muscles that are responsible for the control of breathing.

Possible Causes

This type of sleep disorder mainly occurs with the people that certainly have medical problems.

Central sleep apnea may develop to the persons that have problems within the brain stem. The brain stem is the one responsible with the controls of breathing. Resulting with this, any injury that affects this area of the brain can result problems to a normal breathing during the sleep.

Here are some conditions that may lead to:

• Bulbar poliomyelitis
• Encephalitis that affects the brain stem
• Complications on the cervical spine surgery
• Radiation of the cervical spine
• Neuro-degenerative illnesses like Parkinson’s disease
• Severe arthritis
• Severe obesity
• Primary hypo ventilation syndrome
• Stroke which affects the brain stem
• Medications like narcotic pain killers

Another form of this sleep disorder apnea usually occurs with a person that has congenital heart disease. Apnea which is not connected to another disease is called the idiopathic central apnea. This condition is not likely with the obstructive sleep apnea that has resulted because of the airway blockage. Central Sleep Apnea Causes

Symptoms

• Chronic fatigue
• Sleepiness at daytime
• Headaches in the morning
• Restless in sleeping
• Difficulties in swallowing
• Changes with the voice
• Numbness of the body

Treatment

There are types of sleep apnea that can be treated by medicines that stimulates the breathing. But, patients must remember to stay away from drugs that contain sedatives. Nasal CRAP (continuous positive airway pressure), oxygen and BiPAP or bilevel airway pressure are also used for the treatment of central sleep apnea. If the condition was caused by the heart disease, the main objective is the treatment of the heart disease itself.

Prognosis

Congestive Heart Failure – if that is the cause of the sleep disorder, antagonistic treatment of the heart can improve the outlook.

Brain Injury – if it causes the central sleep apnea, the outlook is tending to be worsen.

Idiopathic Sleep Apnea – outlook of this condition is favorable.

Possible Complications – complication may be resulted from the essential diseases that causes the condition.

See a doctor when you have the symptoms, do not wait for the condition to get worst. This condition is commonly diagnosed when the patients are severely ill. Central Sleep Apnea Causes

Sleep Disorders And Depression

Article by Jeremy Smith

Sleep disorders are becoming increasingly prominent in today’s society, for a number of reasons. Some professionals attribute this rise in patients seeking treatment for sleep disorders to a greater prevalence of prescription drugs, a higher level of stress in today’s society than in previous years, and a growing awareness of sleep disorders themselves. Whatever the cause, it is clear that more and more people are seeking treatment to help them get a better night’s sleep each night.

They vary by type, though they all cause a disturbance of the functions of a usual night’s sleep. Some people have difficulty falling asleep, and others suffer from such severe insomnia that they cannot sleep at all. Others find themselves restlessly waking up often throughout the night. While symptoms and severity levels differ, each of these behaviors could be an indicator of a sleep disorder.

Sleep disorders affect people emotionally, physically, and mentally. It is not uncommon for individuals suffering with a this disorder to develop other conditions as a result of their lack of sleep. Feeling exhausted, feeling depressed, and feeling greater amounts of stress are all common results of the inability to sleep through the night. More complicated medical issues may arise from lack of sleep as well. These additional complications make it even more important for patients to seek help and treatment for sleep disorders as soon as possible.

Doctors, psychologists, therapists, and other medical professionals all work with patients who suffer from this disorder. Some patients have found that taking a prescription medication each day works wonders for their insomnia, and they are able to function normally simply by taking medicine. Others find that counseling to help reduce the level of stress in their lives is necessary. Finally, some people turn to sleep clinics to diagnose more difficult cases.

A Charleston County sleep medicine specialist can work with patients to diagnose their illness and seek a suitable treatment. It is important for a doctor to take all factors into account when diagnosing a sleep disorder, and this can only be done when the doctor takes the time to get to know the patient on an individual level and learn as much as possible about their behavior, family and work life, and other factors that may be influencing their lack of sleep. A quality sleep medicine specialist will learn as much as possible about the patient in order to diagnose and treat their condition properly. Sleep specialists can often be very successful in diagnosing and developing treatment plans for patients with sleep disorders.

Question by : My dog sleeps most of the day is this normal?
I have a pitbull dog I just recently found Friday she is very sweet and gentle but I noticed that he sleeps a lot she can pretty much sleep all day. She is isn’t one yet she is only 10 months old. I have also noticed she runs in her sleeps or twicthes her mouth and paws/legs she has also growled a couple of times in her sleep, does she have narcolepsy and or a sleeping disorder? Or is she just not used to me yet?

Best answer:

Answer by wisePHiL
I have a bulldog. She sleeps 14-20 hours a day. No lie

Best answer:

Answer by YA Junkie
I can’t answer your question very specifically. However, snoring is one indication of sleep apnea. Also, feeling like you never sleep and are always tired are signs that the quality of your sleep is poor. I have a similar problem but probably not as bad as you.

One reason I am writing is to tell you that your question really does not belong in the Alternative Medicine category of YA. I suggest relisting it in the Diseases & Conditions category and/or the General Health Care category.

However, I think the information you posted really needs to be interpreted not just by a regular doctor, but a sleep specialist. I doubt there are many sleep specialists on YA. Is there another doctor who could interpret the results for you sooner than a month?

By the way, 10 mg of Ambien is an average starting dose. Your dosage may need to be adjusted when you see your doctor. I wish you well.

Sleep Apnea Wikipedia

Article by Nick Meyer

Sleeping is a unique phase of our existence. And yet approximately one third of our population has a sleep disorder of some kind. Snoring and sleep apnea are common sleep disorders, but not ones that should be taken lightly. Part of what happens with snoring and with sleep apnea, is that your oxygen levels go down while you’re sleeping. If your oxygen levels go down, your body can’t get into the restorative deep stages of sleep that are necessary for the repair to occur. And for a child, one event in a night is enough of an occurrence to have a child diagnosed as a sleep apnic. That cascades into a whole lot of other things such as bedwetting and attention deficit disorder and other things of that nature. Parents, physicians and other sleep apnea dentists may think “Gosh, the kids are grinding their teeth.” Around the age of five, six, seven, eight is the transitional stage of dentition and many structural and functional occurrences are happen. During that transitional dentition that’s coming and going, they’re struggling for oxygen. They have potential collapse of airway. And there are just a lot of hormonal things. When they’re grinding their teeth, kids cannot go. That’s a stage two in the sleep cycle and can’t get down into REM stage. And that’s true of adults, also.Bruxism or teeth grinding is one of the things that we look for is worn down teeth. We will see that in kids that are eight years old, nine years old, ten years old. Their baby teeth are as flat as this table top. That’s not normal and they are not supposed to be that way. And what is the reason for this? Perhaps they have got some kind of disturbance going on physiologically that’s bothering them. Or maybe they have pinworms or perhaps some other nutritional deficiency. It is likely they have got an airway disturbance which is causing a backup of pressure in their Eustachian tubes, so they’re trying to clear their airway, clear their ears as a result of the clogged airway. GERD, gastric esophageal reflux disease, has been definitively linked to obstructive sleep apnea. So we see that as worn down teeth that has the enamel eroded off of the teeth. As well as headaches, oral facial pain or a coated or slashed scalloped tongue. My fingers, for instance, would be typed scallop. We look at a tongue and we’ll look for all the indentations and the depressions into the tongue. So that is a functional and visual manifestation. A functional problem going on such could be an enlarged uvula and enlarged tonsils. So those are some of the things that we see and we look for. What do we do in dentistry to help childhood sleep apnea? Part of it depends on what it is that is the problem. The answers to the questions come with diagnostics, sometimes we will have people referred in from a medical doctor. If you suspect your child has sleep apnea, see your physician or a sleep apnea dentist.

Question by : Will the VA approve my claim for Sleep Apnea?
I got out of the Marines in July09. When I enrolled in the VA and went to my first yearly exam in 2009, I was prescribed sleep medication because I had stated that I was always tired during the day and couldn’t sleep at night. In Aug 2011 I submitted a claim for insomnia and sleep apnea. One month later I did a VA sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I was issued a CPAP by the VA. I have no active duty record of sleep disorder, will my claim be approved .

I was in Infantry, 2 deployments to Iraq,
I have 30%-PTSD and 10% – Blood pressure .
Combat action is on my record.

Best answer:

Answer by Will Nickel
Just what is it you’re attempting to claim? That you have sleep apnea? They already know that and they’ve given you a treatment for it – the CPAP machine. Are you trying to establish eligibility for a pension? That you’ll probably not be able to do because your sleep apnea is not disabling. It is also highly unlikely you’d be able to establish a claim that your sleep apnea is due to your service.
